American Heart Month: Heart-Healthy Living for Seniors
February is American Heart Month and with Valentine’s Day reminding us to celebrate love, it’s the perfect time to focus on caring for our hearts. Heart health becomes especially important as we age, but the good news is that small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference.
At Orchard Hill, we’re proud to offer many opportunities that encourage residents to stay active in safe, enjoyable ways. Regular movement is one of the best ways to support heart health and residents can take advantage of a variety of group programs designed to keep their bodies moving and feeling their best, including Stretch & Strengthen, Chair Yoga, Sing & Sway, Forever Young Fitness Class and Drums Alive to name a few. These activities support cardiovascular health while also helping to improve balance, coordination, flexibility and overall strength. Also, for those residents who receive PT services, they are able to regularly utilize our Fitness Studio which provides a wonderful space for guided movement and exercise.
Along with staying active, heart health is supported through balanced nutrition, staying hydrated and keeping up with regular medical care. Maintaining a consistent routine that includes quality sleep also plays an important role in keeping the heart healthy. Managing stress is equally important and simple joys such as music, social connection and fun activities can have a positive impact on both the heart and the mind.
This month, we’re celebrating Heart Month by encouraging our residents to focus on wellness in ways that feel achievable and enjoyable. At Orchard Hill, we believe heart health is about more than just exercise, it’s about building healthy routines and feeling supported every step of the way.
