Nutrition & Senior Health: A Look Inside Dining at Orchard Hill
At Orchard Hill, we believe food is so much more than just fuel. As our Food Service Director, Chef Wendy, likes to say: "Food is more than just nutrition, it's a memory, a celebration and a way to show I care."
That philosophy shapes everything we do in our scratch kitchen, from the ingredients we source to the way we plan our menus around the wants and needs of our residents. It's also why our dining room is never limited to residents alone. Family and friends are always welcome to join us for a meal, any time.
Health-Conscious, Flavor-Forward
Good nutrition starts with good choices, and our culinary team places a strong emphasis on low-sodium and low-sugar preparations across our menus. Every menu is reviewed and approved by a registered dietitian, so residents and their families can feel confident that what's being served supports their overall health and well-being.
Health-consciousness doesn't mean sacrificing flavor. Our three chefs work hard to bring out the natural taste of every dish through fresh herbs, quality ingredients, and thoughtful preparation, so residents enjoy meals that are both satisfying and well-balanced.
Sourcing the Best Local Ingredients
Great meals start with quality ingredients, and we're proud of the relationships we've built with trusted local suppliers.
- Captain Marden's- a local favorite based in Wellesley, MA is our go-to for the freshest specialty fish and seafood.
- Duva Distributors- a company based in Worcester, MA provides our freshly baked breads and pastries.
- Verrill Farms- a favorite local farm our chef visits in Concord, MA to choose seasonal, farm-grown fruits and vegetables at the peak of ripeness for upcoming recipes.
- JW Lopes- based in Chelsea, MA also provides us fresh produce and herbs.
- Orchard Hill- many of our apples and apple based recipes use apples straight from our very own orchard, connecting our residents to the food they eat in a truly special way.
A Menu Built Around Choice
We structure our daily menu around when it’s most beneficial to have a heartier meal, offering a more substantial lunch, with a lighter dinner in the evening. Each day our kitchen provides:
- Breakfast- our kitchen offers a full breakfast with eggs cooked to order, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, fresh fruit and more each day.
- Lunch- is our largest and heartiest meal of the day featuring two chef specials, along with our always available Alternative Menu, which offers a full selection of everyday favorites for residents who prefer something familiar.
- Dinner- each evening our dinner menu offers one featured entrée paired with our Alternative Menu for those who'd prefer a different option.
- Always Available- Light snacks, fresh fruit and beverages are always available throughout the day in our common kitchen located off our sunroom.
A Hand in the Planning
Once a month, Chef Wendy meets with our residents to talk "menu planning." It's a chance for residents to share what they've been enjoying, along with new dishes they'd love to see on upcoming menus. These conversations often turn into something so much more than just menu planning, with residents encouraged to share cherished family recipes or favorite childhood dishes that our chefs can bring to life for all to enjoy.
We try to make mealtime feel like home, because at Orchard Hill, every meal is a chance to do more than nourish. It's an opportunity for comfort, connection and conversation, bringing residents and staff together around the table.
